RSS Feeds

I had no idea about RSS before reading the book and exploring this. I asked my senior daughter if she had heard of it and she said, "Yeah, because there's an APP on my phone for it." She then opened it up but said she never looked at it because she didn't know anything about it. I have the same phone as her so I'm assuming I can retreive from my phone. That is something I'll look in to. I'm not sure that this is something I'll benefit from. It seems like something you'd have to check daily to keep up on and I don't know if I can make the time for that. I guess I'll find out!

I did have some difficulty setting it up. I couldn't get the options as to where to send it from the UMW site. It just went to my favorites on my home computer with no option for anywhere else. But I was able to see all those options and understand what Anne was referring to when I tried from work.

After viewing a few, and knowing what is currently on my school's, here is what I feel should be on an elementary school website:

• general information about the school library:  hours of operation, services available, procedures for checking out/returning books, etc.
• the online catalog so students/parents/teachers can look for books we have and/or availability
• link to the school's encyclopedia subscription (We do currently have the info right on the site as far as password and username.  I have been curious about this and some questions came up from others about this.  Anyone looking at the website, not just the school families, would have access to this.  Not sure if this is a problem or not.)
• links to sites that will help with research/homework/school in general as well as links to author sites and book sites
• descriptions of our school's extra reading program and how the LMC and LMS can help with that

I also think the ease of use and layout are so very important if we want students and parents to use it.  I like the idea of having a featured book/author but to be honest, I don't know that I'd get around to changing it often enough to keep interest.  This would also be good for featuring pictures of kids/staff reading and sharing a good book but would have to be updated often as well.  There is a lot to think about but I know that if it is there it would need to be useful.  More and more students are getting information through the website and we need to make it user friendly and provide valuable resources and information.
